"Home Security" is a Joke!
(originally written 1/31/02)

=====================

* Now known as Homeland Security (should be currently known as More Insecurity) *

Sounds like the US will be become - a less radical version of Nazi Germany - a police state.

In one letter to the editor to either Time or Newsweek magazine, a person wrote the comment in the context of saying, "If you can think of it, it can be done". This is absolutely correct. Just like a James Bond movie and the gagets they come up with for Mr. Bond to use against the "bad guys".

So, many have thought of quite a few ways a terrorist could attack any nation-state in the world, even a very closed, restrictive one. Not to give anyone specific ideas, but a "brainstorming session" can reveal hundreds of ways to destroy a country internally - the longer the time dedicated to this sort of activity, the easier the number of possible actions could come to mind. Added to that, would be if a person had been trained in these destructive tactics. Now, suppose you had thousands of people who were doing the same thing ? See the potentialities ?

It would easy to panic an already nervous population. The government or any of its bureaucracies would be helpless to stop-it. Home security, yea right! Especially a department that has no real power and cannot compel anyone to cooperate or supply funds for its purpose - a "paper tiger".

Many people are willing to sacrifice rights to obtain security. How well has it worked for various very restrictive and "tightly secure" countries in the world (like Israel) ? Its trading "freedom" for more power & control to the government. How efficient is the government ? Security at what price ? Why is there not a better use of non-vulnerable, multi-million dollar satellites to enhance security ?

The military should be patrolling the borders - you sneak-across, you get shot-on-sight! Let them use armor-piercing bullets.
